Birth Doula

Choosing who will stand with you through birth is a sacred task. I believe that your personal connection with your birth companions is crucial; I welcome open conversation and curiosity at any point during your search for your doula. I want to support what is right for you! Please feel free to reach out to get to know me better, with no pressure to commit until you are ready.

Why hire a doula?

The decision to include a doula is one more and more families are making. This trend reflects both the complexity of our current birth climate, and a greater collective recognition of the emotional AND physiological benefits of professional labor support.  In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that every birthing person have access to a doula.

In short, doulas contribute to safer, more satisfying births in hospitals, birth centers, or at home. As professional guardians of the delicate hormonal orchestra of labor, doulas not only help parents and partners enjoy their children's births, but increase the likelihood of optimal health outcomes as well.

A doula can help you navigate the many decisions and preparations involved in meeting your baby: birth place/type of setting, attendants, pain coping techniques, possible interventions, mental, physical, and emotional preparation, the role of your partner and involvement/care of older children, nutrition, cord cutting, placenta options, breastfeeding, postpartum care, early parenthood, etc. Your doula will work by your side more consistently than any other individual birth professional. Doula support functions through a trusting, solid relationship, and spans pregnancy, labor of any length (and through a possible transfer from home/birth center to a hospital), through your first weeks postpartum. Your doula works for and is accountable to you, not a hospital or birth center.

During birth, a doula is able to tend to all non-medical needs of you and your partner. She may maintain a beautiful space by adjusting lights, opening or closing windows, playing music, diffusing beneficial aromas, or hanging your favorite photos and mantras on the walls. She is equipped with pain-management techniques, as well as emotional and spiritual support practices, which she will tailor to your circumstance. She will be there to answer partners' questions and explain options or medical protocol, and she will know when to softly suggest ways partners can offer support during each phase of labor. She will be ready with hair-ties, hot/cold compresses, essential oils, water, massage tools, and her rebozo. She can guide you through visualizations, offer acupressure, touch, encouragement, listen to your needs, and give you privacy, or offer partners a break if they need rest. When baby is at last in your arms, your doula may offer basic breastfeeding support.

"Studies have shown that having a doula as a member of the birth team decreases the overall cesarean rate by 50%, the length of labor by 25%, the use of [artificial] oxytocin by 40%, and requests for an epidural by 60%."
